Helen Slater, known for her role as Supergirl in the 1984 film, recently welcomed Milly Alcock as the new Supergirl in the DC Universe. Alcock, star of House of the Dragon, will lead her own solo film titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” after being cast by director James Gunn.

Slater shared her sentiments through an Instagram post, featuring a collage of actresses who have portrayed Supergirl, including Sasha Calle, Melissa Benoist, and Laura Vandervoort. The caption read, “Passing the Cape: Honoring 40 years of the Woman of Tomorrow.”

Despite Alcock not having an Instagram presence, Slater tagged the other Supergirl actresses in the post, expressing her congratulations. Ana Slater, the writer of the upcoming “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” joined in, stating, “Congratulations to the luminous Milly Alcock, the next Supergirl! DC universe awaits you! You will be AMAZING!!” James Gunn responded with emojis, acknowledging the heartfelt post.

Gunn had previously confirmed Alcock’s casting, recounting that she was the first choice for the role more than a year ago.

He noted that after watching Alcock in the first season of “House of the Dragon,” he believed she possessed the edge, grace, and authenticity required for the DCU’s Supergirl. Gunn expressed his amazement at how things had unfolded since then.

The role reportedly came down to two finalists, with Meg Donnelly also considered. Donnelly, known for her work on “The Winchesters,” has recently voiced Supergirl in animated movies. Ultimately, Gunn’s initial choice of Alcock prevailed.

While “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” does not yet have a release date, it marks an exciting new chapter in the DC Universe, with Milly Alcock set to don the iconic cape for the beloved superhero.
