During the 2023 season, the Carolina Panthers faced significant challenges with their offensive line, ranking among the worst in the NFL. They had a quarterback pressure rate of 41.1%, the fourth-lowest in the league, and allowed 65 sacks, tying with the Washington Commanders for the second-highest in the NFL.

In a move to address these issues, the Panthers have taken action during the free-agent legal-tampering period by reaching an agreement with former Miami Dolphins offensive guard Robert Hunt. The deal is reported to be a five-year contract worth $100 million, with $63 million guaranteed.

Making it the second-highest in average per year ($20 million) and total value ($100 million) among NFL guard contracts.

Hunt, who received Pro Football Focus’ eighth-highest grade among guards in 2023 with a 76.4 offensive grade, allowed only one sack and three quarterback pressures last season. This signing is expected to provide much-needed support to Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, who faced pressure on 40.7% of his throws in 2023, ranking sixth-highest in the NFL.

Young’s passer rating when under pressure was the lowest in the league at 73.7.

Robert Hunt, a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, started his career as an offensive tackle but excelled after being moved to the guard position by the Miami Dolphins. At 28 years old, he brings experience and talent to bolster the Panthers’ offensive line.

Hunt joins a list of departing Dolphins, including Xavien Howard, Christian Wilkins, Andrew Van Ginkel, Jerome Baker, and Emmanuel Ogbah.
