Patrick Mahomes, known for his stellar career in football with the Kansas City Chiefs, once harbored dreams of a baseball career. Mahomes, a former two-sport athlete in baseball and football during his time at Texas Tech, ultimately chose to focus on football, a decision that has seen him rise to become a first-round NFL draft pick, a two-time NFL MVP, and a three-time Super Bowl MVP.

Despite his football success, Mahomes still feels the allure of baseball, especially considering his family ties to the sport. His father, Pat Mahomes, was a professional baseball pitcher, and Patrick himself is a part owner of the Kansas City Royals.

In an interview with Time Magazine, Mahomes expressed his willingness to explore the possibility of returning to baseball, at least in a practice capacity. He mentioned discussions with the Royals about potentially participating in spring training, indicating a desire to see if he still possesses the skills to play the game.

Mahomes’ Return to Baseball? Chiefs Star Mulls Over Spring Training Opportunity

While Mahomes acknowledges the need for approval from the Chiefs, his openness to the idea suggests that he remains intrigued by the idea of returning to the baseball diamond, even if only for a practice session to gauge his abilities.

Patrick Mahomes’ connection to baseball runs deep, thanks in part to his father’s successful career as a major league pitcher. With 11 seasons in the MLB across six different teams, Pat Mahomes Sr. brought the sport’s atmosphere into the family’s life, even pitching for the New York Mets in the 1999 National League Championship Series.

Despite being drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round, Patrick Mahomes Jr. opted to pursue both football and baseball at Texas Tech University. Initially planning to play both sports for three years before re-entering the MLB Draft, Mahomes ultimately gravitated towards football due to his early success and the physical toll of juggling both sports in his freshman year.

Now firmly established as one of football’s brightest stars, Mahomes still holds a desire to revisit his baseball roots, even if it’s just for a few practices during spring training. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, acknowledging Mahomes’ natural talent and background in the sport, jokingly offered to join him as his manager, highlighting Mahomes’ potential to excel in baseball as well.
