The Pittsburgh Steelers have undergone significant changes in their quarterback room this offseason, parting ways with Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph. In their place, the Steelers have acquired Russell Wilson from the Denver Broncos and obtained Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears. Now, they have added a third quarterback to their roster.

On Monday, Steelers general manager Omar Khan announced that the team had reached an agreement with quarterback Kyle Allen. Allen spent the 2023 season with the Buffalo Bills, effectively completing a swap of backup quarterbacks between Pittsburgh and Buffalo, as Trubisky joined the Bills while Allen signed with the Steelers.

Allen entered the league undrafted in 2018 and initially joined the Carolina Panthers. He started in 13 games for the Panthers across his first two NFL seasons, accumulating 3,588 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions in 15 total games played.

In 2020, Allen was traded to the Washington Football Team, reuniting him with head coach Ron Rivera. However, he started only four games before sustaining a season-ending ankle injury. Subsequently, Allen joined the Houston Texans in 2022, starting in two games but ending with losses.

Allen has appeared in 30 NFL games, including 19 as a starter, with a record of 7-12. He has thrown for 4,734 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. While Allen is presumed to be the third-string quarterback in Pittsburgh, the Steelers’ quarterback depth chart remains uncertain. Head coach Mike Tomlin has stated that Wilson is currently in the lead position, but competition will determine the final lineup when the team hits the practice field.
