Raymond Chan, a seasoned art director within Marvel Studios’ production design department, passed away on Tuesday in close proximity to his residence in Wales. He was 56 years old. Confirmation of his passing was provided by the studio.
Chan’s enduring legacy includes his significant contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His portfolio boasts credits on notable films such as “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and the highly anticipated “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
According to sources cited, Ryan Reynolds, star of “Deadpool,” is deeply affected by the sudden loss of Raymond Chan, expressing profound sorrow.
The crew of “Deadpool & Wolverine” is also mourning the departure of their esteemed colleague.Chan’s journey with Marvel began with his involvement as supervising art director in the 2013 sequel “Thor: The Dark World.” Beyond Marvel, his expansive portfolio encompasses a range of notable films such as “National Treasure,” “Nanny McPhee,” “Children of Men,” “Blood Diamond,” “Robin Hood,” “Knight and Day,” and “Dungeons and Dragons.”
Born on December 1, 1967, in Oldham, Greater Manchester, Chan was raised by his parents, immigrants from Hong Kong.
He pursued graphic design at the Liverpool School of Art and furthered his education with a Master’s degree from Kingston Art College.
His foray into the entertainment industry commenced with his involvement in the film “The Secret Rapture” in 1993, propelling him into the realm of film and commercial art departments.
“Ray was first and foremost a good friend to everyone at Marvel Studios. He was a talented collaborator who brought creativity and attention to detail to every frame of every movie he worked on, and who was able to bring out the best in each department he worked with,” said Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito in a joint statement.
“He was the nicest human being and was such a pleasure to work with, hugely generous and the kind of person who could take the seed of an idea and turn it into something beautiful.
We are devastated by his passing. He will be missed by everyone at Marvel and our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends.”
Raymond Chan is survived by his wife, Lindsay, as well as his children, Caspar and Sebastian.
