Real crimes have long fascinated filmmakers, inspiring stories ranging from serial killers to intricate heists. Spree taps into this tradition, weaving a tale that blends contemporary fears with the quest for online fame.

The film, released on August 14, 2020, follows Kurt Kunkle, a rideshare driver with deadly ambitions. Kurt, portrayed by Joe Keery, is a small-time influencer eager for a following. His plan? Commit a series of murders across Los Angeles, all while documenting his spree online.

The film introduces Kurt through nostalgic found-footage style YouTube clips, showcasing familiar video trends like “how-tos” and “draw your life.” As his killing spree unfolds, Kurt’s actions become increasingly gruesome, targeting unsuspecting victims in creative and horrifying ways.

One notable murder involves intoxicated friends who meet a grisly end in a rooftop junkyard. Another chilling scene features a child streamer and former babysitter, Bobby Base Camp, becoming a victim of Kurt’s deadly plan.

Is Spree Based On True Events?

Despite its fictional nature, Spree draws inspiration from real-life cases. Director Eugene Kotlyarenko revealed that the film was inspired by a specific case of a rideshare driver going on a killing spree.

While the film’s plot differs from any known case, it evokes the shocking 2016 incident involving Uber driver Jon Dalton, who murdered six people in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

To prepare for his role, Joe Keery transformed his charismatic persona from ‘Stranger Things’ into an awkward and cringe-worthy character. He immersed himself in list of aspiring influencers with low viewership, adopting their mannerisms and tones.

Keery’s dedication to his role, combined with extensive research on rideshare drivers, lent authenticity to Kurt Kunkle’s character. Spree offers a chilling commentary on modern society’s obsession with online fame and the lengths some may go to achieve it.

The film’s blend of horror and dark humor, coupled with its real-life inspirations, makes for a gripping and unsettling narrative. Whether you’re a fan of thrillers or intrigued by the intersection of technology and crime, ‘Spree’ delivers an amazing and thought-provoking experience.
