The San Francisco 49ers defense started Super Bowl LVIII strong, holding the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense to just three points in the first half. The confidence in their ability to contain quarterback Patrick Mahomes grew, particularly after safety Ji’Ayir Brown intercepted Mahomes early in the third quarter, providing a spark for the defense.

After Brown’s interception, safety Tashaun Gipson expressed confidence in facing Mahomes, telling teammates Brown and cornerback Isaiah Oliver, “That is just a regular quarterback, bro. He’s regular, bro. And we gonna make his ass look regular.” Gipson emphasized that Mahomes was no different; other teams just hadn’t been capitalizing on opportunities.

However, Mahomes and the Chiefs ultimately secured a 25-22 victory in overtime, with a walk-off touchdown from wide receiver Mecole Hardman. Despite the earlier characterization of Mahomes as “regular,” he claimed his third Super Bowl ring and earned Super Bowl MVP honors for the third time in five years.

During the championship parade, Brittany Mahomes, Patrick’s wife, addressed the comments from the Niners defense, saying, “Don’t forget you’re a regular quarterback.” Patrick Mahomes responded to the crowd, acknowledging the characterization, stating, “I’m a regular quarterback, it is what it is.”

Despite the playful banter, Mahomes, with numerous records and accolades, is widely recognized as one of the premier quarterbacks in the league, with some already considering him among the greatest of all time.
