One NFL Draft hopeful has passed away before his dream could come true. Amitral “AJ” Simon, a former defensive lineman at Albany, aimed to be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft but tragically died this week at only 25 years old.

No cause of death has been provided yet. “The UAlbany football program was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral “AJ” Simon this morning,” the football team said in a statement Wednesday.

“AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany. He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years. He will be profoundly missed.”

Social media reacted with sadness to the sudden loss of the young athlete who won’t get the chance to pursue his NFL dream.

Simon, born in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, played five games for the Great Danes during the 2023 regular season. Before joining Albany, he attended Bloomsburg University for his undergraduate studies.

Seven NFL scouts attended Albany’s Pro Day to watch Simon, referred to as a “pass rush stud” in a video he shared online late last month.

In December of the previous year, Simon announced his decision to enter the NFL draft, expressing gratitude for his time at UAlbany and excitement for the future.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked AJ Simon as the 36th-best edge rusher in the 2024 NFL Draft class. He was respected for his skills and character, with coaches praising him both on and off the field.

Simon, a first-team All-NCAA defensive end, played a key role in Albany’s journey to the semifinals of the NCAA FCS playoffs in 2023. His stats for the last year included 55 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and 21.5 tackles for loss. Despite the tragedy, AJ Simon’s impact as a football player and individual will be remembered and celebrated.
