Avellini, known for his fierce competitiveness on the field, played a pivotal role in leading the Bears to their first postseason appearance in 14 years in 1977, alongside the legendary Walter Payton.

During the memorable 1977 season, Avellini showcased his talent with 11 touchdown passes and a career-high 2,004 passing yards.
