Richard Lewis’ official cause of death has been disclosed. The renowned actor and comedian, known for his role in Curb Your Enthusiasm, passed away at 9:22 p.m. on Feb. 27.

His death certificate, obtained, indicates “cardiopulmonary arrest” as the primary cause. Parkinson’s disease, diagnosed in 2021, was listed as a secondary cause.

Cardiopulmonary arrest signifies the cessation of adequate heart function and respiration, often leading to death. This condition is particularly prevalent in individuals with coronary artery disease, as highlighted by the National Library of Medicine.

Richard Lewis publicly disclosed his battle with Parkinson’s disease in April 2023, describing it as “a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves.”

He announced his retirement from his comedy career due to the disease and had been privately combating it since his diagnosis.

More Revelations

The late actor will be laid to rest at the Temple of Aaron Cemetery in Roseville, Minnesota. The confirmation of the comedian’s passing came in a statement from his representative Jeff Abraham on Feb. 28.

Abraham revealed that Lewis had “passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles” the previous night after “suffering a heart attack.”

“His wife, Joyce Lapinsky, thanks everyone for all the love, friendship, and support and asks for privacy at this time,” Abraham added.

In 2020, Lewis reflected on his choice to rejoin the show later in life, despite enduring two back surgeries, in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. He expressed,

“After 20 years of being associated with the whole show, it was too much on my mind that I couldn’t let [Larry David] down.”

Shortly before his passing, Lewis remained hopeful about his health, as evidenced by his optimistic remarks, less than three weeks before his death. He had missed the season 12 premiere party for Curb on Jan. 30.

“I have some occasional walking difficulties with Parkinson’s the last couple of years. It’s not major. I’m getting through it fine so far, but I didn’t want to go to, spend five or six hours mingling with so many people,” he explained of skipping the event. “It’s just asking for trouble.”

He expressed disappointment at missing the festivities but added, “all things considered, I’m doing quite well.”
