Recap

Even in the most bizarre roles, Josh Brolin proves his versatility, as Saturday Night Live delved into the bizarre and unusual for an unusual yet hilarious episode. Expected Ariana Grande cameos and a surprise appearance by Scarlett Johansson as Katie Britt, the GOP response, elevated one of the season’s best episodes.

Was she really as strange as the speech? To be honest, she did a near-perfect imitation, so yes! We’ll just say that the return of Ego Nwodim’s Lisa from Temecula may have been the most conventional and quiet sketch of the evening, as it’s nearly hard to adequately convey the degree of strangeness of the sketches this evening.

To put it simply, everyone went for it. Alright, we’ll be honest. We chuckled at the clumsy conclusion. Sarah Sherman was the one who had to do it even though she knew it was foolish.

The rest of the sketch, which starred Josh Brolin as the Sandwich King who became enraged and astonished when some of his regulars chose to order pizza instead of picking up one of his subs, was done fairly nicely.

The sketch was stranger than humorous, from Billie Eilish’s Barbie song to the more unsettling information about his merchandise, and that ending. Was it always your dream to see a 56-year-old actor strip down to his underpants in 2024? What if he started with a reading of his strange Timothée Chalamet poetry?

Before jumping into an ice bath, he proceeded to recite a poem about Kenan Thompson’s face, which naturally implied caving in to the demands of the spectators. Though they enjoyed his Gotye joke, the audience seemed unsure of how to react to him the entire time.

We were also a little taken aback by how strange his regular beat felt. Josh is a naturally humorous person, yet there was something tentative and uneasy about this. Yes, this was a surprising topic for a musical interlude, but we were really into Josh Brolin’s and Andrew Dismukes’ annoying ’70s/’80s hairstyles.

Thanks to this little song, we now know what to do when the guy to the right and in front of you on a plane starts playing Ad Astra when all of your electronics are dead. Who requires captions?

The best part was undoubtedly when Josh and Andrew started singing and fighting before Kenan interrupted the ridiculousness by stepping in as the air marshal. Someone actually experienced this identical situation, which shows how specific it is.

Perhaps all movies shown in flight should have subtitles so that viewers won’t have to guess who Ad Astra is. Just a recommendation!
