Shogun Episode 3 Recap: Blackthorne & Mariko Form An Alliance

Disney’s “Shogun” is a historical drama set in feudal Japan during the 1600s, just before the Battle of Sekigahara. Lord Yoshii Toranaga, the most powerful military leader of the era, faces impending siege as enemy forces draw near.

Into this volatile scenario washes up James Blackthorne, a British navigator with secrets that could alter Toranaga’s fate. Toranaga assigns Mariko, a mysterious English-speaking noblewoman, to translate for Blackthorne, forging an unexpected connection between them.

As the conflict escalates, Toranaga, Blackthorne (later known as Anjin), and Mariko find themselves embroiled in the power struggles of feudal Japan. Amidst the chaos of war and political intrigue, they navigate a perilous path, their destinies entwined as they confront rival daimyos and navigate shifting allegiances.

Toranaga’s rivals sent an assassin to kill Blackthorne in Osaka, but Toranaga outsmarted them by switching rooms, allowing him to defeat the attacker. With Blackthorne and Mariko, they prepare to journey from Osaka to Edo. Mariko shares Toranaga’s past as a hostage in Edo with Blackthorne.

To avoid detection, Toranaga disguises himself as a woman during travel. Blackthorne distracts a suspicious samurai by feigning concern for women’s privacy. Along the way, Blackthorne and Mariko discuss differences in English and Japanese traditions regarding women and marriage, hinting at a growing connection between them.

Toranaga’s group is ambushed by Kiyama’s soldiers, but they manage to fight back and survive. They escape on a Portuguese ship, leaving behind Mariko’s husband, who sacrifices himself. Toranaga strikes a deal with the captain but has to leave Blackthorne behind.

Blackthorne, previously held captive, finally gets his chance to prove himself. Left behind as the Black Ship sails away, he takes control of a fishing boat and races to catch up. Despite facing enemy threats, he maneuvers skillfully and earns Toranaga’s approval by boarding the Black Ship.

Lord Toranaga acknowledges Blackthorne’s expertise, tasking him with teaching soldiers to sail and granting him the esteemed position of Hatamoto for protection.

Meanwhile, Toranaga’s envoy outsmarts rivals, stalling political action and paving the way for imminent conflict. The episode wraps up with Toranaga and Blackthorne strengthening their bond during a diving lesson, enjoying a break from the ongoing conflict with a moment of shared fun.
