SM Takes Strong Legal Action To Protect BoA, Including Overseas Platforms

SM Entertainment has made significant strides in combating malicious online behavior directed at BoA, announcing detailed legal actions against defamation, false information, and cyber harassment. The agency has appointed the law firm Sejong as its legal representative to file complaints and pursue investigations promptly.

Targets of legal actions include users from Korean online communities such as DC Inside, Instiz, Pann Nate, Daum Cafe “Women’s Generation,” theqoo, and others where continuous malicious posts have surfaced. SM Entertainment is preparing strong legal measures to combat these offences and the spread of fake news and rumours across various platforms.

Addressing challenges with overseas platforms, SM Entertainment highlighted difficulties in obtaining cooperation from global social media platforms for defamation cases against artists. Despite this, the agency is actively exploring avenues for cooperation and considering lawsuits based on the headquarters’ location of these platforms.

In addition to the efforts to protect BoA, SM Entertainment is committed to monitoring and addressing illegal acts targeting all their artists. Clear cases of illegal behaviour are being categorized for discussion with the affected artists, followed by prompt legal actions when necessary.

BoA’s recent contemplation of retirement, hinted at in an Instagram post, has brought renewed attention to the issue of online harassment and defamation. In response, SM Entertainment announced a large-scale lawsuit initiative on April 11 to safeguard BoA and combat malicious comments and defamation effectively.

The agency remains steadfast in its commitment to defending the dignity and honour of its artists against cyberbullying and online abuse.
