“Squid Game 2” Nears Completion Amid Cast Controversies, Filming at Korea’s Largest Studio

"Squid Game 2" production progresses at Studio Cube in Daejeon, with final scenes being filmed in Korea's largest film studio.

The production of “Squid Game 2” is nearing completion, with the final shoot scheduled to conclude in June at Studio Cube in Daejeon’s Expo Park, the largest film studio in Korea.

An official from the “Squid Game 2” production team revealed on May 5th that Studio Cube had recently dismantled the existing set and constructed a new one for the remainder of the drama. The series is utilizing Studio A, the largest space in Studio Cube, spanning approximately 5,000 square meters (1,500 pyeong). Notable actors such as Lee Jung-Jae, Lee Byung-hun, Lee Si-wan, and Kang Ha-neul are currently filming at this location, although specific plot details remain confidential.

Given Studio Cube’s expertise in chroma key filming, it’s speculated that the production team is capturing game scenes reminiscent of Season 1’s intense challenges, where participants donned numbered sweatpants and risked their lives.

The filming for “Squid Game 2” commenced in July last year, marking a year-long process to complete the series. While the first season consisted of 9 episodes, the sequel will feature 6 episodes. With a production cost amounting to 100 billion won, the series is slated for release between October and December, generating high expectations among viewers.

Despite the progress on set, “Squid Game 2” has faced controversies surrounding its cast members. The production team issued a belated apology for inconveniencing passengers during a scene filmed at Incheon International Airport last July. Additionally, criticisms arose over the casting of Big Bang’s T.O.P. (Choi Seung-Hyun) and Oh Dal-soo, who faced charges related to drug use and sexual harassment, respectively.

Despite these challenges, “Squid Game 2” continues to generate significant buzz and anticipation, driven by its star-studded cast, innovative storytelling, and record-setting production quality.
