The film not only captivated audiences but also secured an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. In response to this recognition, Miyazaki expressed his gratitude in a special video message addressed to members of The Academy.
The recorded message, assisted by Toshio Suzuki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and a distinguished producer, conveyed sincere appreciation for the prestigious nomination.
Suzuki conveyed, “I’m very honored that The Boy and the Heron has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. I’m grateful to the Academy and everyone who nominated us.”

In the video, Miyazaki and Suzuki engaged in a discussion about “The Boy and the Heron.” During the conversation, Miyazaki revealed that the film contained “elements” of an autobiographical narrative.
When asked about the aspect of the movie that brought him the most joy, Miyazaki responded with candid honesty, saying, “I’m glad that I made it all the way to the end.
All that’s left now is my worn-out self. I thought that it would never end… [but it did] because the money kept coming.”
Having devoted seven consecutive years to the creation of “The Boy and the Heron,” Miyazaki expressed the need for a well-deserved break.
