Sugar on Apple TV+ offers a new spin on crime noir with its protagonist, John Sugar, played by Colin Farrell. Unlike typical noir characters, John stands out as a genuinely good person, making the series unique.

The series features vibrant settings instead of dark ones. While there are unsavory characters, most are good-hearted, including John. He’s mysterious but not bitter, facing life’s challenges with optimism.

Traditionally, noir protagonists have inner conflicts due to past traumas or difficult natures. They often have a tough exterior and struggle to connect with others. Think of Humphrey Bogart in classic noir films.

John Sugar breaks this mold. He’s refined, friendly, and approachable. Instead of blending in, he drives a noticeable blue convertible, making his mark wherever he goes. The series gradually reveals more about his character.

John Sugar is not your typical noir hero

Despite being genre-bending, Sugar retains core noir elements. It features intriguing cases and a protagonist with inner struggles. John navigates these challenges differently, maintaining his integrity throughout.

In the series premiere, “Olivia,” John demonstrates his character. He helps Melanie Mackie without taking advantage of her vulnerable state. His actions surprise Melanie, highlighting his uncommon decency.

In another scene, John befriends a homeless man named Carl. He offers financial help and a new phone, genuinely wanting to assist. Even when Carl’s choices lead to tragedy, John’s goodwill remains unchanged.

Sugar’s message is clear: being good is a choice. John shows that one doesn’t need a dramatic transformation to be better. Helping others and making ethical choices, even when difficult, is the right thing to do.
