Suni Lee was astonished by her unexpected achievement at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite entering the competition without high expectations, she was thrilled to earn a bronze medal in the women’s gymnastics all-around final.

On August 1, her floor routine score elevated her from fourth to third place, securing her a spot on the podium. Lee expressed her surprise and joy, describing the experience as “absolutely amazing” and noting that she did not anticipate winning a medal.

Lee approached her floor routine with a mindset focused on finishing strong, regardless of the outcome. She considered simply participating in the Olympics to be a significant accomplishment. Her teammate, Simone Biles, won the gold medal in the same event, while Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade claimed silver. Lee recounted becoming emotional upon realizing she had secured the bronze, marking her fifth Olympic medal.

Biles and Lee had already contributed to Team USA’s success by winning gold in the team all-around final on July 30. Both athletes are scheduled to compete individually in upcoming events, with Lee qualifying for the uneven bars and Biles competing in the vault, balance beam, and floor exercise finals. Their continued participation highlights their prominent roles in gymnastics and their potential for further medals.

Lee’s journey to the 2024 Paris Olympics was particularly challenging due to her health issues. Diagnosed with two kidney diseases the previous year, she faced significant obstacles, including symptoms like water retention that led to a substantial weight gain of over 40 pounds. Despite these health challenges, Lee’s determination and resilience enabled her to compete at the highest level once again.

Reflecting on her health battle and Olympic journey, Lee shared her gratitude and the deeper significance of her latest medal. She emphasized how her experiences have taught her strength and perseverance, expressing her pride in representing Team USA at her second Olympic Games. Lee’s story is a testament to overcoming adversity and the unwavering support she has received from her fans and teammates.
