Super Junior D&E has opted to cancel their music show appearances in response to the backlash surrounding their comeback title song “GGB.”

On March 14th, the duo revealed the tracklist for their forthcoming 5th mini album ‘606.’ However, their title song ‘GGB,’ which in Korean is a derogatory term referring to women, sparked considerable criticism.

Consequently, on March 16th, ODE Entertainment, the duo’s label, issued an official statement announcing the cancellation of their music show appearances featuring ”GGB.”

The label wrote,

“Hello, this is ODE Entertainment. First of all, thank you to fans who have been loving and supporting Super Junior D&E.

We acknowledged the issues surrounding the upcoming album’s title song “GGB” and held internal meetings with the artist.

“GGB” is a song reflecting feelings about missing an ex-girlfriend in a more comfortable setting with cute lyrics. We had no intention to use the term in a negative way.

However, we are sorry that we did not give much more consideration that there might be varying opinions regarding the use of the term given the change of time and that there could be people who might feel uncomfortable about using the term.

We discussed many different ways but there are restrictions because the project is already almost complete.

So we have decided to cancel the upcoming music show appearances after hearing different opinions internally. But we are going to release all the various content we prepared. We ask for your understanding.

We apologize to the fans who were looking forward to this comeback. And we are once again thankful for your continued support. Thank you.”

JiJBae and GiGiBae (GGB) are deemed offensive for several reasons:

  • Demeaning Nature: These terms insult individuals by branding them as immature or insignificant, conveying a derogatory tone that can be hurtful.
  • Potential Misogyny: By utilizing gender-specific language as an insult, it can be interpreted as misogynistic, implying negative attitudes or beliefs towards women.
  • Reinforcement of Stereotypes: The usage of JiJBae and GiGiBae reinforces harmful gender stereotypes and biases, contributing to the perpetuation of societal prejudices and discrimination.

Super Junior D&E’s ‘606’ is set to be released on March 26 at 6 PM KST.
