It’s been almost twenty years since Supernatural started on The WB, and four years since it ended in 2020. The show followed two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, as they hunted monsters. The finale, called “Carry On,” had mixed reactions from fans. It still had the scares, laughs, and brotherly moments that made the show famous.

But some fans were disappointed and wanted a better ending for the Winchesters. The episode left them frustrated and hoping for more closure. After fifteen years of adventures, how did Supernatural ultimately end?

In Supernatural’s second-to-last episode, “Inherit the Earth,” there’s a big battle between Chuck, who’s God, and Jack. Jack absorbs all of Chuck’s power, becoming the new God. This restores the world to normal, bringing back everyone Chuck erased.

Season 15 wraps up loose ends by taking key characters out of the picture. Chuck loses his power and becomes mortal. Rowena sacrifices herself in hell but becomes its Queen. Castiel confesses his love to Dean before sacrificing himself. Jack disappears, becoming a part of everything around them.

In the second-to-last episode, we saw Sam and Dean driving away in their famous car, Baby, as the show highlighted its best moments. But what’s next for them now that they’re not bound by a scripted destiny?

Will they retire and live peacefully, or will they keep hunting until the end? Let’s look back at their journey and see how things wrap up for the Winchesters.

Supernatural Ending Explained

In Supernatural’s final episode, “Carry On,” Sam and Dean take a break from the serious stuff to enjoy a pie contest. But things quickly get serious when a family is attacked by masked killers, leaving tragedy behind. Sam and Dean discover the culprits are vampires, continuing a tradition of evil hunting started by their dad.

They track down the vampires and learn they’ve been kidnapping kids for years to raise them as food sources. It’s up to the brothers to stop them and save the children.

In the final showdown in a creepy barn, Sam and Dean rescue the kidnapped boys and face off against the masked killers, including a cameo from Jenny, a vampire from Season 1. They defeat the killers, but Dean gets impaled by a piece of rebar during a fight. Despite Sam’s efforts to stay hopeful, Dean knows he’s dying and asks Sam to stay with him.

Throughout 15 seasons, Dean has been brought back to life many times. But this time, it’s different. In a very sad moment, Dean dies for good. It’s important to know that Dean made this choice, not Chuck. Even though getting stabbed by a vampire wasn’t how we expected Dean to die, it’s how he wanted to go out, fighting till the end.

In Dean’s last moments, he and Sam share a heartfelt goodbye, expressing love and pride. Dean dies in Sam’s arms, and Sam honors him with a hunter’s funeral. Afterward, Sam is left alone, except for Dean’s dog, unsure of what to do next.
