Fans of the 2016 action-thriller The Accountant were surprised and delighted to learn of a confirmed sequel. Now, JK Simmons, who reprises his role in the follow-up film, has shed some light on when cameras will start rolling.

Building upon the success of the first film, “The Accountant 2” brings back Ben Affleck as the enigmatic Christian Wolff, a brilliant accountant with autism who moonlights for criminal organizations.

This time around, he’s pulled back into the world of intrigue by Treasury Department agent Marybeth Medina, played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson. Their mission? To track down the killer of Medina’s former boss.

Simmons, along with Affleck, Jon Bernthal, and director Gavin O’Connor, return for the sequel. Bill Dubuque also steps back into the screenwriter role, ensuring a sense of continuity for fans of the original film.

When will The Accountant Season 2 Be Released?

In a recent interview with Collider promoting the second season of “Invincible,” Simmons offered an update on his involvement with “The Accountant 2.”

He revealed that filming is starting much sooner than anticipated. In his own words, “I head to Los Angeles in a little over a week to do some rehearsals and pre-production and start shooting my chunk of it.”

This news comes as a welcome surprise considering the film’s long journey through development. Stuck for nearly a decade, “The Accountant 2” seems to be finally gaining momentum.

Back in February 2022, producer Mark Williams hinted to Screen Rant that the script was already underway. The biggest hurdle likely involved scheduling the star-studded cast.

There’s a wrinkle in Simmons’ update, however. When considering Ben Affleck’s busy schedule, things get a bit murky. Affleck is slated to direct “Animals” for Netflix, reuniting with Matt Damon.

Recent reports suggested these projects wouldn’t clash, with “The Accountant 2” filming pegged for the latter half of 2024. It’s possible that the initial filming involving Simmons won’t require Affleck’s presence.

This scenario could hint at potentially smaller roles for either Affleck or Simmons in “The Accountant 2.” The early plot details suggest that Simmons’ character might be central to the story, with his death serving as the catalyst for the investigation.

Ben Affleck will once again step into the shoes of Christian Wolff, the brilliant but enigmatic forensic accountant with autism. Joining him is Jon Bernthal, reprising his role as Christian’s brother, the ruthless hitman Braxton.

Simmons will breathe life into Director Ray King of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, while Addai-Robinson returns as Treasury agent Marybeth Medina.
