In the previous chapter, we see a moving moment when Killian musters the strength to apologize to Rowena. Overcome with remorse, he acknowledges abusing her and reveals the suffering he’s gone through, even revealing the dark ideas that have haunted him.
But Rowena is unwavering in her resolve not to give up Killian. She calls him conceited and emphasizes his dislike for her well-being, raising doubts about the sincerity of his remorse. This realization makes Rowena’s battle with her opposing emotions even more difficult.

In Chapter 66 of “The Mistress Runs Away,” we see Killian apologize sincerely to Rowena at the beginning of the chapter. He acknowledges mistreating her and the suffering he went through when they were apart. Killian goes so far as to say that he thought about taking his own life, but he was stopped by the idea of their child.
Even after Killian apologizes, Rowena refuses to give up on him. He is accused by her of being arrogant and self-centered. The discussion unexpectedly goes off course when Killian opens up about his difficult family background. In an attempt to build a connection, he shares with Rowena his sense of betrayal and loneliness.
But Rowena has her traumatic history to talk about. She talks of a horrible day when her nanny killed her at a relative’s request. Rowena lost faith in others as a result of this betrayal, including her feelings for Killian. The disclosure deepens Rowena’s emotional turmoil and her battle with forgiveness.
As this touching conversation is taking place, the focus of the narrative moves to Cecilia, who is devastated following her meal with Duke Devonshire. She thought he would pop the question, but he was more interested in Diana, another woman. Cecilia goes up to her father and tells him to give the Duke his whole attention.
Rowena and Lauren talk about the latest happenings back at the Ludville Mansion. After the suffering Killian caused, Rowena is unsure of whether to comfort him or keep her distance. With Tom’s disclosure, a new character connected to Eselwood is introduced, and his motivations and past are called into doubt.
The focus switches to Cedric at the end of the chapter, as he goes back to his hometown to find Rowena and reconnect with Demian. He is startled to discover, though, that Rowena has been staying in the Ludville Mansion and has been hiding her whereabouts to keep him at ease. Fearing about Rowena’s safety, Cedric goes to the Ludville Mansion, feeling confused and anxious.
The chapter closes on a suspenseful keep in mind leaving readers curious about Rowena’s mysterious circumstances and how they will be resolved. Chapter 66 is an emotional journey in which Killian expresses regret to Rowena for mistreating her. But Rowena isn’t ready to forgive him just yet. To become close to Rowena, Killian then opens up about his difficult family background.
When Duke Devonshire expresses interest in another woman, Cecilia is heartbroken. Tom, a mystery guy, offers Cecilia his help.
