The People’s Joker has been a surprise hit since its release earlier this month. This unauthorized queer parody of the DC superhero, inspired by Todd Phillips’ 2019 Joker, is winning over audiences and critics alike.

Following its initial success, the film is expanding to more locations across North America, with screenings in cities like Seattle, Boston, Portland, New Orleans, and more.

The journey to success wasn’t easy for The People’s Joker. After a screening at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness, Warner Bros. intervened, halting the film’s screenings.

Despite this setback, distributor Altered Innocence stepped in to help, recognizing the film’s potential under fair use. Now, the film enjoys a 95% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and is set to appear in 15 Alamo Drafthouse locations.

The People’s Joker Stars Big Names in Comedy

Beyond its comedic take on the Clown Prince of Crime, The People’s Joker offers a personal story about gender identity and transition.

Vera Drew, the film’s editor and lead actor, delivers a standout performance as Harlequin the Joker, a clown navigating a world where comedy is illegal.

Joined by a talented cast, including Bob Odenkirk and Tim Heidecker, Drew’s film challenges conventions and offers a fresh perspective on superhero narratives.
