He started out as a member of Whitebeard’s crew, but later betrayed his captain and comrades when he murdered his fellow crew member Thatch to steal a powerful Logia type Devil Fruit ability called the Dark-Dark Fruit.

Years later, Blackbeard captured Ace and handed him over to the Government authorities in exchange for being granted Warlord status.

Blackbeard committed these terrible acts in order to cause conflict that would assist him in assembling his preferred pirate crew, defeating Whitebeard, and taking Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit vibration abilities for himself.

However, how could one person have two Devil Fruit powers when that should not be possible?

Oddly, Blackbeard is the first documented example in One Piece of someone using two Devil Fruit abilities at the same time, which is thought to be unable to occur.

The CP9 agent Jabra has confirmed this limitation is genuine and not a fabrication by the authorities. Additionally, both pirates and marine soldiers alike were shocked to see Blackbeard employ two distinct powers, and neither they nor their fans understood how he accomplished this feat.

Several intriguing One Piece fan theories try to explain the abnormality of Blackbeard having two Devil Fruits. But for now, it remains one of the biggest mysteries surrounding this deceitful pirate.

Tremor-Tremor Fruit Connection

This particular One Piece theory stands out because it diverges from the common belief that something unusual about Blackbeard’s body lets him wield multiple Devil Fruits.

Instead, this fan theory focuses on the special nature of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit and proposes it could explain why Blackbeard was so determined to steal it from Thatch.

Additionally, this theory supports Blackbeard’s claim that his Dark-Dark Fruit is uniquely powerful among Devil Fruits.

Since his battle with Ace, Blackbeard has stated his Dark-Dark Fruit is extraordinary even compared to other Logia types.

While it doesn’t grant him the intangibility most Logias provide, and in fact makes him more vulnerable to attacks, Blackbeard insists the Dark-Dark Fruit’s other abilities make up for that downside.

For example, his mastery over darkness enables him to manipulate gravity to some degree, pulling objects and people toward him against their will. He can even absorb things into his darkness and expel them later with tremendous force.

The most notable power of Blackbeard’s Dark-Dark Fruit, as demonstrated in his fight with Ace, is its singular ability to cancel out other Devil Fruit abilities through physical contact.

Many One Piece fans speculate this power, or some augmented version of it, is what allowed Blackbeard to absorb and use Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit after his death.

If true, it would make sense why Blackbeard was so determined to obtain the Dark-Dark Fruit, even waiting for decades on Whitebeard’s crew hoping to find it, as he admitted.

Possession of the Dark-Dark Fruit and its unique nullification ability was likely crucial to Blackbeard’s plan to steal the Tremor-Tremor Fruit.

By shutting down Whitebeard’s powers upon defeat, Blackbeard could obtain the Tremor-Tremor Fruit without its powers killing him for already having a Devil Fruit ability.

This theory provides a plausible explanation for how Blackbeard can wield two Devil Fruits, centered on his Dark-Dark Fruit’s rare capacity to disable other Devil Fruit powers.

The Chimera Theory

The “Chimera Theory” is one proposed explanation for how Blackbeard can wield two Devil Fruit powers. Chimera means a creature composed of parts from multiple animals.

Theorists surmise that with a Cerberus Zoan form underlying his Dark-Dark powers, Blackbeard functions as three independent “beings” in one body. This would allow him to consume multiple Devil Fruits when normal people can only use one.

The most disturbing One Piece fan theory for how Blackbeard obtained Whitebeard’s powers suggests he resorted to cannibalism. By consuming part of Whitebeard’s corpse, Blackbeard could absorb the Tremor-Tremor Fruit abilities without having to find where the fruit reappeared.

There is canon precedent for this, as Big Mom accidentally ate Mother Carmel and gained her Soul-Soul Fruit powers that way. It seems a Devil Fruit’s essence permeates the user’s entire body.

Consuming enough flesh and blood transfers those powers to the cannibal.

Applying this to Blackbeard, theorists propose he may have drank Whitebeard’s blood on the battlefield, or ripped out and eaten his heart. By ingesting part of Whitebeard’s body, Blackbeard could immediately take the Tremor-Tremor powers for himself.

Though gruesome, this theory offers an explanation based on Big Mom’s origin for how Blackbeard circumvented normal Devil Fruit rules.
