Years ago during a tragic forest fire, Toya Todoroki (who later became the villain Dabi) was severely burned and presumed dead by his family, including his father Endeavor. However, he was actually rescued from the flames by All For One, the powerful supervillain.

Unfortunately, while All For One saved Toya’s life, he could not completely heal all of the boy’s injuries. Specifically, the extreme burns destroyed Toya’s tear ducts, leaving him unable to cry actual tears in the present day.

This explains why when Dabi appeared emotional in a later chapter, he cried blood instead – likely from internal bleeding related to his old wounds.

Dabi’s bloody tears also symbolize the deep frustration and pain he still feels over his abandonment and perceived betrayal by his family during that fire. While it seems to have been a terrible misunderstanding that the Todorokis thought him dead, the damage was done.

The embittered Toya discarded his old identity, becoming the villain Dabi and devoting himself to revenge against Endeavor.

Search teams presumed Toya’s demise, leading the Todoroki family to grieve the loss of their son and brother.

When Toya finally awoke, All For One manipulated the child’s trauma and resentment, convincing him that he had been abandoned and forgotten by his family. This exploitation of Toya’s emotional wounds set the stage for his eventual transformation into the villain Dabi.

In a later chapter, while lounging and cursing his relatives, Dabi sheds bloody tears – a condition medically known as haemolacria.

Since his tear ducts were destroyed in the same fire that had once nearly killed him, these tears were actually blood from internal bleeding related to his old burns.
