When Up All Night hit the screens in 2011, it seemed like a winner. With big names like Christina Applegate, Will Arnett, and Maya Rudolph, NBC thought they had a hit on their hands. But despite the star power and the talent behind the scenes, the show struggled right from the start.

Applegate, fresh off her success in Married with Children and Anchorman, was cast as Reagan Brinkley, a professional trying to balance work and motherhood.

Her husband, Chris, was played by Arnett, who is known for his role in Arrested Development. Rudolph rounded out the cast as Ava, Reagan’s friend and talk show host.

The show’s creator, Emily Spivey, drew inspiration from her own experiences as a working mom. Originally titled Alpha Mom, the show got a green light from NBC for 13 episodes. But before it even aired, changes were made.

Massive Early Changes

NBC wanted to capitalize on Rudolph’s popularity, so they retooled the show to showcase her comedic talents. This shift changed the dynamic of the series, focusing more on Ava’s antics than Reagan’s struggles.

Despite efforts to boost ratings with guest stars and time slot changes, Up All Night couldn’t find its footing. Midway through the second season, Spivey and Applegate announced they were leaving the show.

Creative differences and the desire to pursue other projects led to their departure. In May 2013, the show was officially canceled.

While Up All Night may have faltered, it didn’t hinder the careers of its stars. Applegate, Arnett, and Rudolph have continued to shine in Hollywood, proving that even a failed show can’t dim their talent.
