After the terrible attempt on Oyabun Ishida’s life, Tokyo Vice season 2, episode 6 “I Choose You” takes place immediately after. The disputes amongst the majority of Tokyo Vice’s ensemble cast members were, in contrast, somewhat mild until the show’s dramatic conclusion in episode 5.

At the conclusion of Tokyo Vice season 2, episode 3, the return of the fearsome yakuza leader Tozawa started to tip the odds in favor of an imminent violent battle for control of Tokyo.

There were hints of a possible alliance between the Tozawa and Chihara-Kai clans as pressure mounted from Superintendent Nagata, Hiroto Katagiri, and the Tokyo Police Force.

But as the shocking demise of Ishida in the most recent episode of Tokyo Vice demonstrates, Tozawa had probably never truly intended to collaborate with Ishida for their mutual gain.

Tokyo Vice’s sixth episode opens with a contemplative flashback to the day Sato and Oyabun Ishida first crossed paths, years before what would ultimately be their final day as comrades of Chihara-Kai.

Recap

Samantha and Nagata are shocked when Tozawa voluntarily appears for questioning at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department in what is probably a calculated maneuver. Offering Nagata pictures from the Tozawa clan celebration he attended the night before, Tozawa claims they provide an alibi in the murder of Ishida.

Tozawa’s readiness and eagerness to surrender his purported photographic proof raises red flags right away. On his way in, Tozawa also noticed Samantha, who had just concluded her interview, and noted that she was uncannily on his mind.

Shortly following the exchange of threats between Katagiri and Tozawa at the Tokyo Police Station, the investigator goes to the Chihara-Kai to find out what information they have regarding Ishida’s murder.

Other members of Chihara-Kai have accepted the reckless Hayama as Oyabun without question, suggesting that Sato has not yet expressed Ishida’s desire for him to take on the position of Oyabun in the future. Hayama, strutting his new throne, refuses to work with Katagiri and skirts the topic of Ishida’s passing.

Katagiri insists that the Chihara-Kai refrain from taking violent revenge on the Tozawa clan. After Ishida’s brutal attack at Club Polina, Jake pays Samantha a visit to see how she’s doing. She is understandably disturbed up for a number of reasons, including her fear that Tozawa knows who she is and her guilt over Masa’s passing.

Samantha is useful in explaining a particular tattoo on one of the murderer’s wrists, identifying it as a Daruma, which is seen as a lucky or resilient charm. Though it’s unclear if Samantha told the police this information or not, Jake has a great lead to work with now.
