Van Amburg is best remembered for his influential tenure as the general manager of KABC-TV, the flagship station of ABC in Los Angeles. Under his leadership, the station became the most-watched local news outlet.

He played a significant role in launching innovative programs such as *A.M. Los Angeles* with Regis Philbin, which evolved into *Live with Regis and Kathie Lee*, and eventually *Live with Kelly and Mark*. Tom Van Amburg is survived by his wife Mary, his children Zack, Chris, and Arden, and six grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to television broadcasting and local news.
