Tom Van Amburg, a former executive at KABC Los Angeles, died at his home in Los Angeles on June 24, 2024, at the age of 83 after a short illness. He is survived by his children, including Zack Van Amburg, who leads worldwide video at Apple TV+, and Chris Van Amburg, a marketing executive.
Van Amburg is best remembered for his influential tenure as the general manager of KABC-TV, the flagship station of ABC in Los Angeles. Under his leadership, the station became the most-watched local news outlet.
He played a significant role in launching innovative programs such as *A.M. Los Angeles* with Regis Philbin, which evolved into *Live with Regis and Kathie Lee*, and eventually *Live with Kelly and Mark*. His leadership also saw the hiring of renowned Southern California broadcasters like Jerry Dunphy, Christine Lund, Paul Moyer, and Chuck Henry.
After his successful stint at KABC-TV, Van Amburg briefly managed KCBS-TV, where he appointed Don Dunkel as the acting news director. He then became the CEO of Vanamedia and the production company Tri-Crown Productions.
Van Amburg’s career also included on-air contributions with his distinctive style and weekly editorials. Notably, he hosted the special *Coliseum Coliseum* during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and *Eyewitness Anonymous*, which focused on local crime.
In addition to his work at KABC-TV, Van Amburg had a broad career in radio and worked at other ABC-owned stations in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. His brother, Fred Van Amburg, was also a notable TV news anchorman in San Francisco during the 1970s and ’80s, known simply as Van Amburg on-air.
Tom Van Amburg is survived by his wife Mary, his children Zack, Chris, and Arden, and six grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to television broadcasting and local news.
