Though it does introduce Colter into the story as the affable and informed survivor he aspires to be, the show chooses to add a lot of exposition in those opening frames as Colter helps stabilize the poor girl, primarily for the benefit of the viewers.

Although Colter Shaw is quite knowledgeable about everything related to the outdoors, what makes the beginning most compelling is his poise in the face of a quite dangerous circumstance. Okay, so we can infer that it’s his responsibility to save this woman, but he’s in a pretty distant place, by himself, and not too burdened with medical equipment.

Although it would be quite reasonable to feel a little overwhelmed, Colter is not just supportive but also logical. It was a great approach to establish the plot without being overly intrusive to reveal his work after completing the opening rescue.
