United Nations experts have urged for a thorough investigation into what they describe as “credible allegations of egregious human rights violations” against Palestinian women and girls in Gaza and the West Bank by Israeli forces.
These allegations, as outlined in a statement by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, encompass grave offenses such as extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, degrading treatment, and sexual violence.
The UN experts expressed their concern over the arbitrary detention of hundreds of Palestinian women and girls since the Hamas attacks on October 7, highlighting reports of inhuman treatment including denial of basic necessities like menstruation pads, food, and medicine, as well as severe physical abuse.
They also cited instances of sexual assault, including rape and threats of sexual violence, allegedly perpetrated by Israeli soldiers.
While the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have refuted these accusations, asserting their adherence to international law, the UN experts stress the importance of conducting a comprehensive investigation into these allegations to uphold the rights and dignity of Palestinian women and girls.
The call for an investigation comes amidst criticism directed at the UN and human rights organizations for their response to reports of gender-based atrocities and sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas fighters.
While UN Women has expressed alarm over these reports, Israel has accused the UN of remaining silent on the sexual violence and gender-based violence carried out by Hamas.
Amidst conflicting narratives and denials, the need for an impartial investigation to ascertain the truth and hold perpetrators accountable remains paramount.
