‘Very Much Not Dead’: Star Discusses American Gods Season 4 Prospects

Ricky Whittle, star of American Gods, suggests that the Starz series might not be finished yet. The fantasy drama series is based on Neil Gaiman’s book from 2001, in which Whittle’s Shadow Moon finds herself embroiled in a struggle between the new gods of the modern world and the Gods of classical mythology. Even though the show received great praise, it was cancelled in 2021.

Whittle told Bleeding Cool that the original series might not end, even as the American Gods spin-off Anansi Boys is progressing at Prime Video. Whittle notes that he and Gaiman have been in constant communication over American Gods becoming available to other networks and streams that would be interested.

He and the author are still hoping to adapt the novel’s last few chapters for the big screen. See Whittle’s complete justification below.

It’s not dead. Neil Gaiman and I have been talking for the past two or three years about moving the story to another streamer to finish it.

For Shadow Moon to return, there is therefore more story there. And I have a great deal of interest in it. Neil Gaiman: “I want to finish the book American Gods,” and I want to do it for the fans.” Since the book’s conclusion is its best part, he wants to see that story through to the end.

It would be a crime for us to stop there because this twist is so amazing. Thus, there is undoubtedly activity, and there have been discussions between Neil Gaiman and myself about assembling a team to wrap up the story.

Even though Gaiman had started outlining plans for season 4 in 2019, the show concluded with the tragic season 3 cliffhanger of American Gods, in which Shadow perished as a result of Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) master plan to acquire dominance over the New Gods.

Many people are still excited to see more, even though Starz only did a partial adaptation of the novel. Gaiman could be better equipped to revive American Gods now that he’s had his recent television experience. Good Omens Season 2 and The Sandman have both brought Gaiman further success.

In addition to receiving positive reviews from critics, both programs have more episodes planned, with the former’s spin-off Dead Boy Detectives premiering in April 2024. Given how well-received and popular these adaptations are becoming, Gaiman might be able to persuade Netflix or Prime Video to acquire American Gods.

Moreover, if the spin-off is successful, the streamer might see the opportunity to bring Anansi Boys back, as the show is now doing well on Prime Video.

Many people may have started to assume that American Gods would never be finished because it has been cancelled for more than three years and the streaming market is moving into an uncertain period.

Still, it has a chance because Whittle and Gaiman advocate for resuscitation. Despite casting conflicts and showrunner departures during American Gods’ first run, the show’s enduring reputation and Whittle and Gaiman’s tenacity may make it possible for the Old Gods to reappear.
