Any narrative centred around the lives of spies is guaranteed to have a mystery at its core—a persistent feeling of unpredictability that causes both the audience and the main characters to question what’s going on just outside of their field of vision.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a 2024 drama directed by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane and based on the same-titled 2005 movie, debuted on Amazon recently and stunned audiences with its deft handling of the complex connection between its central characters and the enigmatic espionage plot.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, who play the title pair, do a fantastic job of keeping the focus of the production on their relationship and providing a viscerally realistic depiction of a complex romance.

The majority of the program is devoted to this depth, which is a pleasant departure from the original’s sex and violence, which, however cool, deprived the drama’s central connection of genuine gravity. However, even with this change in emphasis to the main couple’s difficulties, the show retains all of the high-stakes spying that made the original so captivating.

This espionage led to unanswered questions that dogged the show for the first eight episodes. While the season finale addressed some of these issues, many more remained unanswered. Fans are unable to stop pondering what issues remain unanswered from this season and where these unresolved questions could take the tale in the future, as they eagerly await the announcement of Season 2.

Our Biggest Unanswered Questions After ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s Season 1 Finale

In addition to seeing the main characters of Mr. & Mrs Smith for the first time, viewers also get to know the unmasked boss who will finally match them up—the enigmatic “Hihi.”

This invisible character, who only ever communicates with them through screens, stands in for the larger company that hires “John” and “Jane,” neither of whom is aware of the organization’s goals, how it obtains its resources, or—most importantly—who is in charge.

These two are recruited by email (which shows up when they are both rejected from the job routes they had hoped for), and their only communication with their handler is through screens and the occasional card stuck to a bottle of wine.

Their relationship’s difficulties ultimately override their concerns, despite their uneasiness at this ignorance, especially once they discover their mistakes are being monitored in a sinister success system. That is, until their last encounter with a different pair of Smiths, which discloses the unsettling fact that Hihi is all-knowing.

The four “Smiths” (Parker Posey and Wagner Moura) that our John and Jane meet in Episode 4 click immediately and go on a double date that ends with our main couple having to fight for their lives in a foreign nation. Surprisingly, though, that’s not where these new additions factor into the mystery.

By the time the conclusion reveals the truth, Erskine and Glover’s pair think that their meeting was purely coincidental: Everything about the gathering was organized. John, played by Moura, claims that the manager, known as Supe, gave him the precise address and time of day to meet them—an unplanned location that Glover’s character had not intended to visit.
