Yuri On Ice Film Cancelled: Creators Issue Apology Letter To Fans

The website for Yuri on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence, the anime film in the Yuri on Ice series, announced that they’re not making the movie anymore.

The people in charge and the MAPPA animation studio said they decided this after talking it over because of “various circumstances.”

The team first told everyone about the movie back in April 2017. The original 12-episode TV show started in Japan in October 2016.

Crunchyroll put the show online as it came out. Funimation also streamed an English version and then put it out on DVD and Blu-ray in February 2018.

The creators officially canceled the Yuri on Ice movie

Fans of the 2016 anime series Yuri on Ice have been waiting eagerly for almost a decade for news about the animated movie that was announced in 2017.

On April 19, 2024, they finally got the announcement they were dreading about Yuri On Ice, the Movie Ice Adolescence.

The group behind Yuri on Ice The Movie: Ice Adolescence shared on X Twitter that they’ve officially canceled the film.

Since it was first announced in 2017, progress on the Yuri on Ice movie slowed down over the years. Fans kept hoping, holding onto the occasional updates, believing the movie would eventually come out.

Though it’s not clear why it got canceled, MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka mentioned before that, despite its popularity, the movie didn’t make much profit.

Yuri on Ice has been a hit in Japan, racking up awards along the way. It snagged three prizes at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival, plus a Japan Character Award.

At Crunchyroll’s first Anime Awards, it scooped up seven more trophies. In 2019, the Crunchyroll editorial team even ranked it among the top 25 anime of the 2010s.

In Japan, Yuri on Ice was released in six parts on Blu-ray and DVD. Each release topped the Oricon Animation Blu-ray disc and Animation DVD disc rankings, showing its popularity.

In 2017, it ranked as the eighth-most successful media franchise in Japan. It also had the second-highest combined sales of Blu-ray and DVD for any anime that year, and it took the top spot for combined sales among TV anime.

Yuri on Ice was a hit on social media platforms like Tumblr, Sina Weibo, and Twitter. It garnered over a million tweets more than any other anime series during its broadcast season.

Even professional figure skaters took notice and praised the show. Some even performed routines to music from Yuri on Ice during the 2018 Winter Olympics.
