This new release signals a fresh direction for his upcoming album, “Room Under the Stairs,” which is set to release on May 17. In “What I Am,” Malik adopts a mellow vibe with guitars, pianos, and drums, reflecting on themes of confusion and longing.

The lyrics delve into personal introspection, with Malik pondering love, identity, and the complexities of life. This shift marks a departure from his previous single “Love Like This,” known for its techno production and AutoTuned vocals.

While “Love Like This” didn’t chart on the Billboard Hot 100, it gained traction, reaching No. 26 on the U.K. Singles Chart and amassing 18 million views on its accompanying video.

Malik teased fans with the album title and artwork of “Room Under the Stairs,” showcasing a countryside setting with a studio oasis, suggesting a departure from mainstream genres.

Working with Grammy-winning country music producer Dave Cobb, Malik explored new sonic territories, infusing his music with raw emotion and personal narratives.

In a podcast appearance in 2023, Malik hinted at his evolving sound, promising a project that his fans wouldn’t expect, featuring real-life experiences and even mentioning his daughter.
